Studio notes / Stage 2

Engineer.

Algorithms are designed, combined, and parameterised into reusable effect sequences — each one a building block in a personal visual toolkit.

Stage 2 / 04

Decide how the image can change.

An emboss kernel turns brightness changes into relief. Atkinson dithering translates tone into dots. Swapping their order changes what the second operation receives.

Change a value or reverse the order. The study rebuilds from its source; later cashier experiments start again.

Available Building Blocks

The lab provides a set of interactive tools — each encapsulating a class of image processing algorithms. These tools are the vocabulary; effect chains are the sentences.

Effect Chains

An effect chain is a series of operations on an image, where each step works on the result of the previous one. The same operations in a different order give a different image.
